Message for the Second Sunday of Lent in the series Where can you go when the world don't treat you right? The answer is home! This week: Securely on the Come Home Path. Coming home means gathering together under Jesus’ hen-like wings we find more than protection. There we become hen-like ourselves, finding our security in weakness, and protecting those who are vulnerable and hurting by sacrificing ourselves.

10-06 - So You Want to See God, Do You?

Message examines what happens when we know God has encountered us. When Simon (Peter) recognizes that Jesus is Lord "God in human flesh" at the miraculous catch of fish, he acknowledges he is a sinner but Jesus relieves his fear and says from now on he will catch fish. When we are encountered by God, our deficiency is transformed into abundance.

10-05 - The Small Jesus

The cataclysmic paradox of life is that we are created to bear God's image and doing so is perhaps the most difficult thing in the world. Spiritual imagination is required in coming to terms to what God wants for your life. Jesus didn’t come to be nice but to pronounce God’s year of Jubilee over all humankind.

Message for Epiphany Sunday, the Adoration of the Magi: How could some mysterious astronomical phenomenon have mobilize and directed the Gentile Magi to trek to what was the end of the world for them, just to see an obscure Jewish baby? Who did they think this King of the Jews was and why would they care? Why should we care about this strange chapter in the story of Jesus’ birth? With our focus on Jesus, we can shed our fears, our indifference and uncertainties for an unfolding journey of faith and intimacy with Jesus.

In hope of experiencing spiritual awakening, we first look to Jesus’ awakening as the Son of God who discovered his self originating life in his embrace of his heavenly Father. Rejected by the world and his people, Jesus all the more offers the essence of life to those who believe. The best marketing in the world may try to imitate Jesus’ offer, but only he has the authority to deliver.

09-52 - The Child Awakens, Part I

This story of Jesus at the end of Passover week shows us the beginning of a vague awareness in Jesus to his greater call in life. The 12 year old Jesus loses his parents for a few days to investigate his "Father’s work" in the Jerusalem temple. This unique narrative gives us insight to discovering our personal spiritual identity and a pattern of renewal for our community. Redemption comes through leaders whom God raises up in response to the deep longing and prayers of the laity generated by the pressure of defeat and suffering.

09-50 - You’re Doing It!

Message for the third week of Advent: joy. The message of John the Baptizer (Baptist) is to bear fruit worthy of repentance. As much as we think this is too hard for us, rejoice! We are doing it. Right now. This is what we were created to do - and we’re doing it. Of course, it is too hard for us, but as Gabriel told Mary, "Nothing will be impossible with God!" The fruit of repentance is compassionate justice for wounded people that produces the joy of transformed lives and transformed congregations.

09-49 - Can You Hear the Call from Nowhere?

Message for the second week of Advent: peace. We seek, desire and delight in God’s messenger of peace. John the Baptizer (Baptist) broke God’s four century silence since Malachi with the voice of one crying from the wilderness. We can approach Advent as opportunity to listen for God so we also can be God’s messengers of peace. God’s messenger of peace comes from the wilderness where nothing distracts from the silence in which God can be heard. Special music by John Tracy Wilson and Eran McGowan.

09-48 - He Came and Will Still Come

Message for the first week of Advent: hope. Answers the question, "If Jesus was messiah, where is shalom?" by looking through Advent as a thin place that gives a glimpse of eternity. Through non-stop conversation with God, we can recognize Christ when he comes in disguise. Advent lifts the weight of life’s worries so we can rest in shalom. Signs that cause others to faint from fear are signs of hope for the shalom of redemption. Our Advent journey relentlessly draw us toward the shalom of our transformation into Jesus’ kingdom of priests.

Fifth of five messages exploring how the New Testament book of Hebrews presents Jesus as the quintessential high priest. As high priest Jesus answers our fears and anxieties, alerting us to the threatening conditions that characterize the times until the day he comes. We find support in the community of the church as we gather to worship, learn and serve together. We prepare for whatever life my bring by meeting together in the church community to provoke one another to love and good deeds.

Jesus is the Quintessential High Priest never to be underestimated. Hebrews tells us that he has entered the Tabernacle of Heaven to secure our eternal forgiveness and to make in us a habitable place for God’s Spirit. This event is the consummation of all history and will help to rewrite ours. Jesus offers a new pivot point or horizon for the hindsight’s of life. This is the most solemn of all conversation, despite the importance of world events around us.

Iris was born in Guangzhou, China, and came to America when she was 7. She grew up in New York City as an only child in a secular home with no spiritual influence from her parents. She attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where she came to know Christ. While she studied business at Cornell, she also realized that God had given her a compassion and desire to help the poor. In September 2008, she moved to Dallas to launch Videre Microfinance, a nonprofit based in Dallas that uses microfinance to serve the poor and to share the Gospel in developing countries. In April 2009, Iris went to South Sudan to launch Videre’s first microfinance site.

09-39 - You Call This Health Care?

Fourth of four messages from the New Testament book of James: Nuts and Bolts in Your Face. The health care debate is full of passion and controversy. Jesus and the New Testament are concerned with health and healing. How do we live that in a society of modern medical technology and business? The intensity of singing, prayer and confession can be increased so spiritual power drives health care.

09-38 - Homecoming 2009 - Inadequate, Unprepared, but Ready!

Central Christian Church hosted an extraordinary Homecoming on Sunday, September 20, 2009. We celebrated the wonderful past of this historic congregation, the oldest, continuing protestant congregation in Dallas, Texas. Special special music was performed and we had a catered lunch after worship in Fellowship Hall that gave us all time to renew old friendships and catch up on what has been happening with our friends, loved ones, and fellow church members. Kyle Fauntleroy, a captain in the U.S.Navy, who has previously served as an assistant minister at Central while he attended Brite Divinity School, will be our guest preacher. Capt. Fauntleroy is currently Senior Chaplain of the United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT.

Third of four messages from the New Testament book of James: Nuts and Bolts in Your Face. To speak encouraging and affirming words to and about people made in the image of God is an expression of worship to God.

Second of four messages from the New Testament book of James: Nuts and Bolts in Your Face. The favoritism that excludes those who are different, difficult, struggling and caters to people of means and influence has no place in the Christian church. The royal law of Christ demands the broadest welcome. God is sending us people with needs and wounds, baggage and issues as fuel for our transformation to become a community of hospitality to our neighbors, the hospitable hands of Jesus for healing, hope and wholeness.

First of four messages from the New Testament book of James: Nuts and Bolts in Your Face. Whether a close friend, a spouse, a co-worker, everyone has a relationship with someone who knows them so well that a comment or that certain look jabs in the vulnerable spot. When the sting comes just to score points, the wound is especially painful. But when it comes as compassionate correction, the pain brings payoff. This week, being doers of the word, and not merely hearers. To be doers of the Word is to listen to Christ’s voice and do everything we can to love him.

Sixth of six messages from Ephesians answering the question: what good is being a Christian? Christians expect spiritual struggle but know that Christ has already won the victory, which they tap into with prayer as the community of faith, the Church. The collapse of the consensus of cultural Christianity in the West plunges those of us who want to be disciples of Jesus into a spiritual struggle in the arena of overpowering prayer.

Fifth of six messages from Ephesians answering the question: what good is being a Christian? There is a lonely road which leads to God. In 1315 A.D. the patron saint of dogs, St. Roch took this path to try and bring healing during the middle age black plague of Europe. His pattern of life was much like that of Jesus, with a hidden identity and full of unconditional love. Where does your lonely path lead?

Yet it happens all the time when we harbor anger, and animosity. Paul’s warning to "not give the devil opportunity" would have served the famous Absalom well, but now it is our turn.
Second of six messages from Ephesians answering the question: what good is being a Christian? In a world of ethnic, linguistic, political, cultural, national division and hostility, God’s plan for the fullness of time is to gather up all things in Christ and for Christians to begin to express and experience that unity now. With Christ as our peace, God uses the wreckage of our human divisions and hostilities to build us into a living, growing temple where God dwells.

<itunes:summary>Second of six messages from Ephesians answering the question: what good is being a Christian? In a world of ethnic, linguistic, political, cultural, national division and hostility, God’s plan for the fullness of time is to gather up all things in Christ and for Christians to begin to express and experience that unity now. With Christ as our peace, God uses the wreckage of our human divisions and hostilities to build us into a living, growing temple where God dwells.</itunes:summary>

Fifth of five messages from 2 Corinthians to incentivize for the long haul in an immediate gratification culture. This week, recognizing that Christ’s power is released where we are weak. Also illustrated by the acclamation of David as King of all Israel in 2 Samuel 51-5,9-10 and Jesus sending his disciples out to minister with no resources in Mark 6:1-13. Instead of disqualifying ourselves because of our disabilities, we can find glad contentment as Christ’s power is released at the exact points of our weaknesses.

Third of five messages from 2 Corinthians to incentivize for the long haul in an immediate gratification culture. The apostle Paul prods us to "commend" ourselves with others for the sake of the gospel. The "surge" philosophy was long ago emphasized as an important piece of Christ’s mission before employed by armed forces in modern nation building. How do we stand with others for the sake of the gospel?

This week, finding inspiration to no longer live for ourselves, but for him who died and was raised for us. Also illustrated by the anointing of David as King of Israel in 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13 and Jesus’ seed parables in Mark 4:26-34. We are confident being at home in the body, knowing that when the day comes we will be away from the body, we will be at home with the Lord, because "in Christ there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!"

07-02 - An Ice-Storm Sunday

On Sunday, January 14th, Dallas suffered a significant ice storm that made travel over the roads of the city dangerous. We suggested that our congregation stay home for their safety and dial into our TeleWorship facility to worship with us from their homes. Only about 30 people, mostly those people who lived in close proximity of the church, made it in and we enjoyed a small and informal but very intimate worship service.

Only about 30 people, mostly those people who lived in close proximity of the church, made it in and we enjoyed a small and informal but very intimate worship service.</itunes:summary>
